Biosphärenreservat Schorfheide Chorin

The Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve starts about 50 kilometres north-east of Berlin and links the tourist regions of Barnimer Land and Uckermark. Schorfheide forms one of the largest contiguous forest areas in Central Europe. The abundance of lakes and peat bogs is nearly overwhelming. The area is home to many endangered animal and plant species. The beech forest in Grumsin offers a unique experience of nature. Listed as a UNESCO “World Natural Heritage Site” in 2011, Grumsin is one of the largest beech areas on earth in the lowlands, covering an area of almost seven square kilometres. The region has also made a name for itself as an organic farming region in Germany: the eco-village of Brodowin is a symbol of sustainable land use.
